Our first forest

In 1925, the town of Santa María was granted the title of Villa and the canton of Dota, number 17 of the city of San José, was created. Years before, Bishop Bernardo Augusto Thiel had stated that Dota meant "Dota", thus sowing the seed of a new life. "point where only birds can fly", thus sowing the seed of hope and the ideal of struggle in the inhabitants.

In the 1990s, Herminio Chacón Morales, one of the founders of the canton, decided that the time had come to pass on the land to his descendants. In those days, in the Zona de los Santos, there was talk of "beautiful lands" and "productive lands"; the former were lands with imposing landscapes, full of nature; the latter were lands for planting crops and livestock. Thus, Don Herminio inherited the beautiful lands to his daughters and the productive lands to his sons.

On the farm of one of Herminio Chacón's daughters, Mireya Chacón Agüero, the imposing nature and the existing biodiversity had built an inseparable, intact and happy world. Over the years, the 53,678m2 farm became, together with other neighbouring properties, protected areas or biological corridors.

However, as with many of these properties, the economic pressures to maintain them have always been significant. For this reason, various economic groups have tried to acquire the land with the aim of developing important agricultural and urban development activities. Fortunately, although the offers have been very tempting, the desire of the owners to preserve this small green paradise has always been stronger. Thus, the Little Costa Ricaproject was born from the point of view of environmental sustainability.
