Why join Little Costa Rica?

  1. Real impact

At Little Costa Rica we believe that people have the right to know what they are getting and to have control over their contribution to nature. Therefore, you will know precisely what your contribution to nature is, as opposed to other options, where you buy an anonymous package of carbon credits corresponding to a certain number of tonnes, or a mix of unspecified renewable energy projects. In other words, if you buy an anonymised package you risk paying a higher price for very cheap displacement, which provides a considerable margin for the seller.

  1. Transparent Management

Little Costa Rica guarantees that your money will actually go to the protection of a forest area, as the property is part of the Environmental Services Payment Programme of the National Forestry Financing Fund (FONAFIFO), which consists of a recognition by the State to those who own and conserve forests and forest plantations that have a direct impact on the protection and improvement of the environment.

Accordingly, and in accordance with Forestry Law No. 7575, the Costa Rican State recognises the following environmental services:

  1. Mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions (fixation, reduction, sequestration, storage and absorption).
  2. Water protection for urban, rural or hydroelectric use.
  3. Protection of biodiversity for its conservation and sustainable, scientific and pharmaceutical, research and breeding use, as well as for the protection of ecosystems and life forms.
  4. Natural scenic beauty for tourism and scientific purposes.

The relationship between the property where the Little Costa Rica Project is located and FONAFIFO can be verified through its official website(http://www.fonafifo.go.cr), under contract SJ-02-22-02442012.

  1. Personal Benefit, Global Impact

Modern life inevitably involves adapting to changes and trends in lifestyle, food and our habits. However, this adaptation can also take place in a sustainable way and in harmony with the environment.

In the Little Costa Rica project we are aware of the carbon footprint that we generate as a society and as individuals, and with it the impact on the increase of greenhouse gases. Therefore, by sponsoring the square meters that the Little Costa Rica initiative makes available to you, you will be collaborating in preserving not only forests, but also promoting the generation of oxygen, water protection and biodiversity.

This is due to the amount of oxygen a tree can produce depending on its species, age, health and environment. According to the U.S. Forest Service and International Society of Arboriculture(http://www.isa-arbor.com/home.aspx), the annual net oxygen production per hectare (10,000m2) of tree canopy is approximately enough to satisfy the oxygen consumption of 18.5 people, i.e. 540m2 per person. Now, if we divide this by 365 days of the year, we get 1.48m2, so in theory, one tree would be enough for one human being. However, of course, in practice one tree per person is not enough, because oxygen dissolves in the atmosphere and must reach a much higher concentration for it to be breathable. In addition, all other species (including trees) must also breathe. Finally, it should be considered that on average a mature tree can absorb carbon dioxide at a rate of 21.7 kg per year.
